Improving Darebin's Environment
As a candidate running for Mayor of Darebin, I am committed to improving our environment through better waste management, promoting art and culture, and ensuring cleaner pollution in our creeks and streets.
✓ Better Waste Management
I am dedicated to making our neighbourhood streets, laneways, and shopping areas cleaner and more environmentally friendly. This includes reducing pollution in our creeks and ensuring cleaner streets.
✓ Art & Culture
Having lived in the area virtually all my life, I want to see art in public places. Graffiti pieces, short for masterpieces, can be pleasing to the eye and should be displayed in public permitted zones, which need to be established. These can include public areas such as toilets, pools, and art centres. Graffiti artwork on the walls can be changed regularly, every six months. However, graffiti marking of another person's property without consent is considered 'wilful damage' and a criminal offence. This type of vandalism negatively impacts our community. The council can help residents and traders remove graffiti quickly by arranging the cheap hire of graffiti removal contractors, discouraging further vandalism.
✓ Art in Public Places
Recycled materials can be made into art sculptures and displayed in front of public buildings such as libraries, art centres, Preston Reservoir Neighbourhood House, and main shopping strips.
✓ Cleaner Pollution for Creeks
Fast food takeaway outlets should be accountable for their packaging that ends up in our creeks. Darebin should charge the biggest producers of litter, such as McDonald's, Hungry Jack's, and KFC, if their packaging is found littering our creeks, gutters, and streets. It's the council that foots the bill to clean it up. These outlets need to take responsibility and be accountable by paying higher rates.
