CR Julie Williams

Darebin is home to over 160,000 people, with one of the largest populations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, from diverse cultures, background, ages, abilities, sexualities, and gender identities. Sharing these different perspectives, stories and experiences all contribute to our community’s rich heritage and character.

Darebin is a leader in climate action, and we thrive on tackling and protecting biodiversity and this planet.

One year ago, I was elected as your Mayor - I pledged to represent the whole community and I have done so by treating everyone equally. During this time I have learned a lot, shown my vulnerability, been genuine, and because of this, I have grown as an individual.

During my time as Mayor, I've established so many connections, exchanged ideas and engaged in fruitful discussions.

I had the privilege of meeting with MPs and Senators to address critical issues that impact the lives of Darebin residents. I have advocated for you on topics like the cost of living, housing concerns, climate change, our refugee community, tackling the homelessness, improving transport infrastructure, and starting the work for additional funding for transformative projects that will shape our city for the future.

I have gained support from Latrobe University, the Reservoir Revitalisation Board, the Northern Council Allianz, the M9 group and other local Councils and I have worked collaboratively towards allocating funds to initiate the scoping not just for Reservoir Leisure Centre but its comprehensive connectivity to universities, major employment centres, and the broader community.

I've championed the extension of the 86-tram route to accommodate the growing population in Melbourne's north, ensuring accessible transport for Latrobe University, Northern and Austin Hospital, Northland shopping centre and Preston Market, for the 37,000 jobs spanning across education, research, health and retail.

It's been an honour and a privilege to have attended many events and seen many projects come to fruition such as the:
• Intercultural Centre
• East Reservoir Family Centre
• Sporting Lighting Projects at JE Moore, GH Mott, IW Dole and JC Donath Reserves
• Wat Djering Animal Facility
• Townhall Avenue Housing Project
• Welcoming the Jamaican Women’s World Soccer Team
• Northcote Aquatic and Recreation centre

My greatest joy for me as Mayor has been to hear the stories of migrants that have travelled across the world to call our city home. I am so proud to have been able to hand out over 1258 Australian citizenships.

And then there has been my continued advocacy for the Preston Market. The market has faced several challenges in recent years, including the possibility of closing. Preston Market holds immense value for Darebin community and the residents of Northern Melbourne. The market provides employment opportunities and, most importantly, offers fresh affordable produce to the entire community. I was so please to hear the news of the traders being offered 5-year leases so we can continue to enjoy the market for many years to come.

The past 11 years

I am proud of all I have contributed to over 11 years as Councillor.
• I have been able to make Darebin a more inclusive place, no matter what your ability is.
• I was the first person to initiate the giant hanging swings installed in playgrounds to ensure children with a disability were included.
• I introduced sensory-friendly and non-toxic plants in public spaces and promoted the introduction of toy libraries in Darebin and the establishment of family-friendly library spaces.
• I advocated for the provision of tranquil areas and dedicated hours at shopping centres to accommodate for people with special needs.
• I've created more disabled parking spaces and made community buildings more accessible and friendly.
• I've championed the building of a new animal facility.
• I've tripled the amount of funding and introduced action plans in tackling graffiti.
• But I am one of 9 Councillors and our decision are collective.

I'm proud to have led this dedicated team of councillors and I would like to express mt gratitude to them and the hard-working staff at Council and there are many, including officers, health support workers and employees who are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being if our community.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my job as Mayor has been seeing the results of our collective efforts.

Thank you for the support

I would personally like to express my sincere gratitude towards two outstanding people: Bernie Geary (my godfather) and Anne Learmonth (long term resident of Darebin). Both had a profound influence on me by mentoring and encouraging me to run for the local election. If it were not for both, I would not be a councillor today.

Also a big shout out to Keith Koffee who has attended nearly every single council meeting for the last 50 years here at Darebin.

And to my family Michael, Jesse, Ella and my dog Twilight for their unwavering support throughout this journey.

There are countless people who I have not mentioned that believed in me, encouraged and supported me, and have had a huge impact on who I am today. Thankyou x3.

I would also like to express my sincere gratitude to the unsung heroes who play a vital role in improving people's lives and for their efforts in shaping Darebin, which is close to my heart, I am forever grateful.

I would also like to thank Susanne Newton for her ongoing support. She is an inspiration to other women who are thinking about running in the upcoming election that are also juggling a day job and being a parent.

Being the Mayor

Of course, being the Mayor also comes with its challenges. There are times when tough decisions need to made, and not everyone will agree with them. But even in these moments, I am grateful for the opportunity to have helped steer our community in the right direction.

I want to say that being the Mayor of Darebin has been a true privilege, and I feel grateful evey day for the opportunity to serve this great city and I hope every person feels valued and included whatever their background is.

The diversity and inclusivity of Darebin, as well as the staff, are it's greatest strength. The invaluable efforts of people from varied backgrounds and all corners of our municipality make Darebin a place I look forward to continuing to work with because when we collaborate, it makes our community an even better place to live, work, and play.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
Cr Julie Williams
